I liked both of those at the time, but my preferences have changed and I didn’t repurchase them. In fact, it reminds me more of the Murad Invisiblur or CoverFX Clear Cover. I was hoping Supergoop’s Unseen would be like that, but it’s very different. It’s lightweight, non-greasy, and completely clear. I know it has alcohol high on the ingredient list, but I don’t mind and neither does my skin. These days I compare every sunscreen I try to my Bioré Watery Essence. I am what people politely call 'fair-skinned' (see also: Dracula-pale) and have been wearing SPF for as long as I can remember.

I’m wearing Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen in this photo, and no makeup. Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40 36.00 from Sephora 36.00 from Amazon 36.00 from Supergoop I used to think all sunscreens were pretty much the same. The original, totally invisible, weightless, scentless sunscreen with SPF 40 that leaves a velvety finish. This sits nicely underneath makeup because of the silicone in it, but again, because of the same issue, my makeup gets greasier faster than if I were using a different sunscreen. This is typically what I experience with those silicone-y primers and the main reason why they’re not my fave.

The product leaves my skin looking smooth and matte, but I find that I look greasy a few hours later. This is important to me – many, many sunscreens leave dark skin looking grey, purple, blue, greasy, or some combination thereof. Unseen Sunscreen goes onto my skin completely clear. This thick swatch of Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen shows that it’s completely clear, and has a smooth gel texture. This isn’t my favourite primer texture – these days I much prefer a tacky gel like MILK Hydro-Grip, or a lotion like the original Fenty primer – and similarly, it isn’t my favourite texture for sunscreen. The texture reminds me a whole lot of the OG Smashbox primers in that it’s slippery and siliconey. That’s right – it is indeed completely clear. When it comes to texture and feel, this is a clear, silicone-y gel. As part of that, when the brand Supergoop! (finally) launched in Canada, I wanted to try their Unseen Sunscreen, a broad-spectrum SPF 40 sunscreen that claims to be completely invisible on every skin tone. My sunscreen use tends to slip in the winter, but I’m trying to get back on track this summer. We deserve products that are made to work on our skin…and they are out there. I used to use tinted moisturizers and colour correctors to make these kinds of sunscreens work…but Black folks shouldn’t have to settle or make it work.

I discovered Bioré Watery Essence, and realized there may be more options options for dark skin than just the conventional sunscreens that turn us grey or blue or purple. When I was just getting into retinols and was really committed to clearing up my skin, I (rightly) got into sunscreen around the same time. I’ll be first to admit that my sunscreen use is spotty at best. I know we should all be wearing sunscreen every day – even folks with dark skin, even during the winter, and even when it’s cloudy out, as pointed out (and if you don’t follow her, you should). I’ve reviewed sunscreens before, and I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with them.
